How do I address gaps in employment
on my resume?
Whatever the reason for a gap on your resume, it does send a
red flag to a potential hiring manager. So the best advice is
to be prepared and to be honest.
What did you do when you were out of work? Did you freelance,
consult, volunteer or take a class? All of those experiences
matter. And you should list them on your resume.
Say you took time off to care for a child or sick family member,
it's perfectly appropriate to address these points in an interview
or even include a brief explanation in your cover letter.
Overall, avoid sounding apologetic. Be proud and play up the
things that you've accomplished or focus on the fact that you
are ready and eager to get back into the world of work.
