30 Ways to Offend an Interviewer

Not everyone is a natural at interviewing for a job. There is a definite level of finesse involved with being able to turn a job interview into a job offer, and if your behavior with interviewers is inappropriate and offends them, you are not likely to be advanced as a candidate. This list of 30 ways to offend an interviewer is a reminder of behaviors to avoid:

  1. Offer a sweaty-palm, dead-fish handshake.
  2. Check your phone. Everyone does it.
  3. Wear a sexy outfit. If you've got it, flaunt it.
  4. Overwhelm the interviewer with noxious cologne.
  5. Bring in your Starbuck's (or any other drink).
  6. Have lunch in your teeth or on your breath.
  7. Evade questions you don't know how to answer.
  8. Interrupt and finish the interviewers sentences to demonstrate how perceptive you are.
  9. Act arrogant. You want them to know how awesome you are.
  10. Don't silence your phone. Your 1812 Overture ringtone showcases your sophistication.
  11. Don't ask any questions about the company or the job.
  12. Tell them to look at your resume if a question seems redundant.
  13. Lookout for anything that looks like discrimination and be ready to display your superior knowledge of the law.
  14. Look at your watch.
  15. Fidget in your seat.
  16. Smell of stale liquor or cigarettes, ideally both.
  17. Curse, because you heard the interviewer do it.
  18. Tell an off-color joke to break the ice.
  19. When asked reason for leaving a job, bad mouth your boss.
  20. Tell them all about yourself, from your first burger-flipping job to what led you here, don't worry about the time it's taking.
  21. Showcase your tats and piercings if you're interviewing for a conservative position.
  22. Don't bother researching the company.
  23. Be a close-talker.
  24. Make "how much does it pay" the first question you ask.
  25. If you don't know the answer, make something up.
  26. Be brutally honest when they ask you about negative things.
  27. Take offense and refuse to answer illegal questions.
  28. Play hard to get.
  29. Don't thank them for their time.
  30. Don't invest time prepping for tough interview questions.
This list is funny, but these things do happen in real interviews, and that is no laughing matter. Your ability to successfully interview for a job affects your entire life, putting a roof over your head and food on your table.
