A Pandemic Resume Revamp

The job market has changed significantly since March of 2020. Whether you are out of work due to the pandemic or you are employed and ready to move on to bigger and better things, you will want to revamp your resume for the changing landscape.

Adjust Your Resume Format

Depending on the job you are applying for, you may need to adjust your resume format away from a traditional, chronological format. For example, if you are attempting to break into a new industry, you' ll want to use a functional resume format that focuses on your sills as opposed to your experience.

Use A Summary Statement

A summary allows you to state your most relevant skills, impact and professional experience, providing a snapshot of who you are as a professional to the hiring manager. An effective way to use a summary to meet employers' needs right now is to point out the ways your transferable skills and experience will benefit the organization during this time. For example, you might focus on your exceptional customer service skills, your flexibility and adaptability, etc.

Customize Your Resume

A simple way to stand out is to tailor your resume to the specific job you are applying for, based on the job posting. By customizing your resume, you ensure you are incorporating keywords from the posting and the specific skills and experience the employer wants in a candidate.

Look for keywords listed under any section that says "requirements," "key skills," and "qualifications." Place those that align with your background at the top of your resume, so you will pass automated resume screeners and it will be easy for hiring managers to find. Be sure to incorporate other keywords throughout your resume, as well.

Make Sure It' s Easy to Read

Employers take less than 10 seconds to scan resumes and determine whether they deserve a second look. That's why it is so important, especially now when so many people are applying for openings, to make sure your resume is easy to read.

  • Keep it to one page unless you are a seasoned veteran, in which case limit it to two pages and make sure the most relevant information appears on page one.
  • Use a plain and professional font; no smaller than 10 point, no larger than 12.
  • Use at least half-inch margins.
  • Include your years of experience in your resume summary if it aligns with the employer's requirements. This can be years of experience with a specific skill or in a specific industry.
  • Place your skills section above your professional experience section if you are changing jobs or industries.
