5 Questions to Ask on Every Single Interview

At the end of every job interview, the hiring manager will ask if you have any questions. The questions you ask will tell them a lot about the type of candidate you are and whether you'd be a good match for the job. Great questions also help you decide whether the job and company are right for you, as well. Here are five questions you should ask on every single interview.

Do You Have Any Reservations About My Skills or Experience?

This is a bold question that can take practice to ask, but it's a good one. It allows you to address any lingering issues the hiring manager may have, and it gives you an opportunity to address them head-on. If you don't ask this question, you may never have a chance to clear something up or fill in any blanks.

What Are the Goals for This Role For the first 30 Days?

This question allows you to see what the employer will prioritize in the role. It also tells you how well the company plans. If the hiring manager can clearly state the goals, you'll know what you'll be working on if you get the job. If the hiring manager can't state any goals, it could be a sign that the company is disorganized.

How Are Achievements Celebrated?

This question can give you a glimpse into the company culture. If you're looking for a place that offers after-work happy hours on the boss, extra days off for a job well done or bonuses for exceeding goals, you might not enjoy working for a company that doesn't go out of its way to recognize achievement.

What Types of People Succeed Here?

Hopefully, the hiring manager can provide you with the skills and attributes of top performers, so you can determine how you stack up. If the hiring manager describes you to a T, you'll likely thrive. If she describes someone who sounds nothing like you, the company may not be the best fit. If you need further clarification after asking this question, you can follow up by asking, "What types of people have failed here?"

What Are the Opportunities For Growth and Advancement?

This question will help you understand the structure of the company and whether there are opportunities for you to grow your career within those four walls. If moving up is something that is important to you, think twice about accepting an offer from a company that doesn't promote from within. This question will also help you uncover how much the company actually invests in the training and development of its people, or if you will be left to manage your own growth.
